David Ilan Weis founded Zenryo to share a lifelong relationship with Japan through stories, discoveries, and the work of its craftspeople. デイビッド・イラン・ワイスは、日本との長い関わりを、物語や発見、作り手の仕事を通して伝えるため、善良を立ち上げました。

Over fifty years ago this started after the introduction to origami and sushi by a Japanese nanny. Then came an immersion in the martial arts, followed by language study at the Showa Institute in Boston, ukiyo-e, sword making and cha no yu at the Museum of Fine Arts, and Japanese gardens at the Morikami. 五十年以上前、日本人のばあやに折り紙と寿司を教わったことから始まりました。やがて武道に没頭し、ボストンの昭和インスティテュートで日本語を学び、ボストン美術館で浮世絵・刀剣制作・茶の湯に触れ、モリカミ博物館で日本庭園を学びました。

It could have stayed academic. It didn't, as the next step was a residency with a family in suburban Tokyo, where the lesson wasn't the language but the way an ordinary evening was conducted. It became a third-degree black belt in Uechi-ryū karate-do — a system with no shortcut in it — the same movement, thousands of times, until it stops being something you perform and becomes something you are. And then decades of teaching it. 学問のままで終わることもできましたが、そうはなりませんでした。次の一歩は、東京郊外の家庭での滞在でした。そこで学んだのは言葉ではなく、ありふれた一晩の過ごし方でした。それは上地流空手道の三段になりました——近道のない体系の中で、同じ動きを何千回も繰り返し、やがてそれは「行うこと」ではなく「在ること」に変わります。そして、数十年にわたる指導へと続きました。

And it became a collection: tansu, raku, a katana, carved ranma, cypress masu, an apothecary chest, a komodaru from Gekkeikan. そして、それは蒐集になりました——箪笥、楽焼、刀、彫りの欄間、檜の枡、薬箪笥、そして月桂冠の菰樽。

None of that is a qualification. Qualifications aren't what get you through the door of a Japanese workshop. What gets you through is being the kind of person the craftsman decides is worth the time — and that judgment is made on things that take decades to demonstrate. それらは資格ではありません。日本の工房の扉を開けるのは資格ではないからです。扉を開けるのは、作り手が「時間を割く価値がある」と判断する人間であること——その判断は、示すのに何十年もかかる事柄によってなされます。
