Japan has been part of my life
for more than fifty years.五十年以上、
日本と関わってきました。

It began with an introduction to origami and sushi from a Japanese nanny. That early curiosity grew into martial arts – Judo, Kenpo, Shotokan and eventually Uechi ryu – then language study at the Japan Society and the Showa Institute in Boston, and learning about Japanese art, sword making, bonsai, ikebana and tea ceremony at the Museum of Fine Arts.始まりは、日本人の子守の方から教わった折り紙と寿司でした。幼いころの好奇心は、柔道、拳法、松濤館、そして上地流といった武道へと広がり、その後はジャパン・ソサエティとボストンの昭和インスティテュートで語学を学び、ボストン美術館で日本美術、刀づくり、盆栽、いけばな、茶道について学びました。

Living with a family near Tokyo brought a different kind of education: how people spend an ordinary evening, the rhythms of a home, and the details you notice when you have time to pay attention.東京近郊の家庭で暮らしたことは、また別の学びになりました。何気ない夕べの過ごし方、家の中の時間の流れ、ゆっくり目を向けて初めて気づく細部。

Karate became a lasting part of that relationship. I earned a third-degree black belt in Uechi ryu and spent decades teaching. The practice continues to shape how I think about learning.空手は、その関わりの大きな一部となりました。上地流で三段を取得し、長年指導してきました。稽古は今も、学びについて考える土台になっています。

Living a stone's throw from the Morikami for five years was a gift; I learned and experienced so much from this incredible place.モリカミのすぐ近くで暮らした5年間は、かけがえのない贈り物でした。この素晴らしい場所で、本当に多くのことを学び、体験しました。

Over the decades I collected furniture, ceramics, scrolls, and other Japanese treasures. Some I have restored myself. All have given me reasons to ask more questions.何十年にもわたり、家具、焼き物、掛軸など、日本の宝物を集めてきました。自分で修復した品もあります。どれも、新たな疑問を持つきっかけになりました。

Zenryo brings these interests together. I share what I have experienced, what I am discovering, and what I still want to understand.善良は、そうした関心を一つにした場所です。経験してきたこと、新しく出会ったこと、まだ知りたいことを分かち合います。
